If you want to do more than relax on the beach or at the hotel then the local area offers a variety of destinations for an excursion.
Visit the culturally rich city of Chania with its old Venetian harbour and enchanting city centre. The island of Gramvousa, a former hideaway for pirates, with the ruins
of a Venetian fortress and castle and a lagoon is worth visiting.
A must-see is the beautiful Elafonisi lagoon (also known as the tropical pearl of Crete) and nearby the Chrissoskalitissa monastery built on a rock looking out over the sea.
Another monastery, Gonia is near the military cemetery of Maleme.
For walkers we can recommend a hiking tour of several hours through one of the spectacular gorges with unique flora and fauna (the gorges of Samaria, Topolia, Imbros and Agia-Irini).
At the northern end of the Bay of Falassarna you can visit the remains of the ancient seaport from the fifth and fourth century BC.
